Gayatri studied medicine at Imperial College School of Medicine, London (1994-2000). After completing her medical training, she spent 4 years training in clinical paediatrics, developing an interest in paediatric infectious diseases. Gayatri completed the MRCPCH (Membership of Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health) in 2004 and joined the London public health training programme in 2005.
She went on to complete a Masters in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2006), the Membership of the Faculty of Public Health (2007) and her public health training (2010). Gayatri currently works as a Consultant Medical Epidemiologist in the Immunisation and Countermeasures department, Public Health England.
Her main areas of responsibility include the national surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) and hepatitis, development of national guidance for the public health management of cases /outbreaks of VPDs and providing expert clinical advice on vaccine and hepatitis related issues.
She has a particular interest in pertussis and has been responsible for leading the investigation and response to the national pertussis outbreak in England since 2011 and the evaluation of the emergency vaccination programme for pregnant women. She has also led and supported the development and update of several national public health guidelines including the 2019 PHE Guidance on the investigation, diagnosis and management of viral illness, or exposure to viral rash illness, in pregnancy.
